Plot
*Greg Heffley writes about his past and how he loved being a baby (see Extra Story)
January
*Greg talk about how Manny doesn't have any friends and how he has imaginary friends.

*He was behind everyone else in school.
Greg talks about his baby days and explains (probably from his imagination) that before being born, he was in a dark place swimming and napping anytime he wanted, until being woken up by classical music that his mother Susan would send through "parental speakers". Susan would also tell Greg about her life through the speakers too and Frank would also tell him about his day at work. Greg then got tired of it and got out three weeks early. Then he explains how everything he got was a hand down from his elder brother Rodrick. Susan used to not let Greg crawl a lot and that resulted in Greg being way behind his playmates in the physical stuff. Greg finally learned to walk, but was in preschool by the time and was still quite behind his classmates. His classmates could do things like use zippers and buttons and many other things Greg was unable to, so he tried to slow them down by giving them wrong information. However, the teacher thought he wasn't learning well and called Susan and told her. Susan made him skip a grade to kindergarten, but he was scared there so he went back again.
*Skipped preschool and went to kindergarten because his mom felt he wasn't challenged enough. He ended up going back

*His family goes to Corny's, a crazy restaurant with kids fucking eachother on the tables and people can't wear condoms (they cut off his dad's dick and hang it on the wall of fail)
Greg then explains whatever Susan did for Greg would not work for Manny as she uses a different technique. Manny's social skills are a bit bad, he also watches The Snurples, a show in which the characters have their own gibberish language and he also made imaginary friends escape danger, have fun and get extra dessert. Greg's mother starts a Family Night thing where they go out or play games rather than watch TV, Greg then talks about the family restaurant, Corny's. Greg is doing house chores until he heard a knock and finds his Uncle Gary at the door. Uncle Gary had bought some Boston counter shirts after loaning some of Frank's money, but the shirts have a typo and he needed a place to stay in. Living with Gary is bad for the Heffleys, his nightmares make Manny shift his bed away from the wall and whenever Rodrick is kicked out of bed in the morning, he has to sleep on the up part of the couch.
*Uncle Gary lives with them because he bought shirts to sell that said "BOTSON" (there was a typo on the shirt and it was supposed to say "I FUCKED YOUR MOM") and no one would buy them.

*They have guests visit the school:
Greg explains how Gary has been trying to get a job, but whenever he gets one, he quits after a few days. One of Greg's teachers, Mrs. Moretta announces in Phys Ed that the ballroom dancing unit is starting and people should find a partner by writing their names in slips and submitting them. Greg explains he will be fine with pairing with anyone except for Ruby Bird, a girl in Greg's school who has a bad habit of biting people and was suspended for biting Mr. Underwood in the elbow. On the partner announcement day, in Greg's favour Ruby is paired with Fregley, but Greg and four other kids were partnerless. The teacher paired them up with each other.
:*Kristina, who is supposed to be an international sex sensation, but just works as a prostitute around the town.

:*The hypnotist, Amazing Andrew. He would swing a stopwatch back and forth and make some 8th graders come on the stage. They would lock their hands with each other and Amazing Andrew makes them think their dicks are superglued together. When he says "dez nutz, " their dicks would be free.
An assembly by Vice Principal Roy and Mrs. Birch announces new members for the Student Council. Greg cannot sign up due to him having three detentions, but sees Rowley could be perfect. Rowley signs up to be Social Chairperson. The winner of the President's voting is Eugene Ellis who promised to replace the school's toilet paper with quilted toilet paper the teachers use. At Greg's house in his room, Uncle Gary played a future game when you are an adult, but Uncle Gary buys scratch tickets.
:*Strong Steve would give a message about staying away from drugs. His grand finale was ripping a phone book in half, with his bare hands
*The kids ended up ripping half of the reference books in the library with their hands and the librarian had to replace them.
*A police officer from the NARC division would come and talk to them about pretending to be a high school student and report the bad kids. This makes Greg and Rowley start their own detective company. Greg sends Rowley to Scotty's house so he can find out what happened to his game. Scotty told him that he lost it, but Greg thought he was lying. When Rowley doesn't come back, he goes to Scotty's house and finds both of them playing his game. Then he decides to fire Rowley.
*They have a new school election. Eugene Ellis becomes the President of the government by promising better toilet paper. Student could bring their own, but teacher limited them to 5 sheet. Greg had a secret stash and had a private stall in the washroom. He went into the stall and put down some spare shoes so it looked like someone was in there and climbed underneath the door.
*They have a fuck party and Greg doesn't want to be paired up with Ruby Bird, a girl who gives STDs to everyone. He requests to be paired with Baylee and he does, but she didn't want to be paired with him. Baylee is then raped in the ass too death by greg.
*Greg convinces Rowley to run for President or Vice president, but he runs for "social chairperson." Greg spent a lot of time making shirts for people to wear that said "VOTE ROWLEY JEFFERSON," so people would notice it when Rowley gave his speech, but no one sat in order. Rowley didn't have to give a speech.
*Their school has a Valentine's day dance, and Greg considers asking some girls but he either gets rejected or isn't brave enough.
*Greg gets Rowley to be his wingman so he can hear the news about girls in the Student Council and help make Greg look good in front of other girls.
*He gets tips from Uncle Gary, who tells him to acts like he gets a lot of candy grams (cards with candy on them and students use it to ask people to be their date to the dance) and change his wardrobe. He wear his dad's leather jacket but his mom comes to class and makes him return it. Then he decides to ask a girl from church because no one would want to go with him to the dance after that incident.
*Susan's (Greg's mom) friend (Mrs. Stringer) and her family come to the Heffley's house for dinner. He meets Laurel Stringer, who is his age but they don't talk at all. Mrs.Stringer said they needed a babysitter because no one would babysit their son, Wesley. Greg volunteers to babysit him so he can talk to Laurel and ask her out to the dance.
*Greg goes to babysit Wesley. Laurel went out with her friends before Greg arrived. Laurel wanted to ride his back around the house so they can have sex, but Greg said no because it would ruin the floors and the funiture.Wesley locks him in the laundry room and rides his bike around the house. Greg gets out by pushing the refrigerator and finding a window and ends up in Laurel's room and sleeps in her bed. Her dad finds him there and persumably fires him.
*On the day of the dance, Greg notices that Rowley had two spots on his chin and on his forehead so he thought they were chicken pox that a kid named Evan Whitehead has been spreading around the school. Greg makes Rowley wear a scarf and a beach hat to cover it.
*Greg and Rowley end up going to the dance as a group with Abigail Brown, who just had a break-up.
*Greg picks her up and takes her to Rowley's car (Rowley's dad had a nice car and a limo cost a lot). Abigail thought Rowley was sitting in his booster seat as a joke (He wasn't. Rowley still uses a booster seat).
*Greg takes them both to a fancy restaurant called Spriggo's, where he had a reservation, but he needed a sports jacket. The restaurant lent him one, but it stunk. They left and ended up going up going to Corny's. Rowley and Abigail order expensive food and Greg has to spend all of his money and emergency money on them. They get to the dance by pretending Mr.Jefferson is a limo driver.
*The theme of the dance is Midnight in Paris
*At the dance, all three of them have a picture taken in front of a backdrop of Paris.
*Greg realizes that the DJ of the dance is Uncle Gary. He also sold BOTSON shirts to the attendees for $5. The BOTSON shirts were supposed to say I FUCKED YOUR MOM, but it was a typo.

*Abigail goes to her group of friends to dance. They go to the bathroom and Greg goes to the boys' bathroom to hear what Abigail might have been saying about Greg. Too many people made noises and by the time it became quiet enough, The girls left the bathroom.
*Seniors show up at the gym saying they booked it months ago for the new Senior Center meeting. They eventually split the gym in half with a partition
*Students came back to Uncle Gary saying that their t-shirts had a mistake on them and they wanted a refund. He tries to distract them by turning up the music and a lot of people start hitting the dance floor. A senior citizen comes over and tells DJ Gary to lower the volume. Uncle Gary lowers in by 80% and you could hear what the senior citizens were saying. The girls continued dancing by wearing their MP3 players.
*The boys gave up on acting decent and started fooling around with the food, and taking off their shirts, and jumping around.
*Abigail sees her old boyfriend (Michael Sampson, who said he could not go to the dance because of family obligations). Michael walks in with another girl because he thought Abigail wouldn't go after he said he could not.
*Abigail cries and her group of friends fuck her. Greg tries to fuck her  too.
*Senior citizens start to pile in from the other side and helped themselves to the refreshments.
*The seniors started making song requests and they ended up taking over the dance.
*Greg sees Ruby Bird walking towards him, so he takes Abigail's hand after she walks out of the bathroom from crying and leads her to the dance floor.
*During their romantic dance, Greg notices sports on Abigail's chin and he scream out loud and grab's everyone's attention. It turned out that it was just semen that you could see because the makeup washed away from her chin when she was crying.
*On the way back, Abigail wasn't talking to Greg and Rowley escorts her back to her door.
*Uncle Gary wins $40,000 from the lottery and moves out of the house.
*Greg ends up getting herpes.
*It turns out Rowley never had the chicken pox and they were just herpes.
*Rowley and Abigail are now fuck buddies.

Extra Story
February
The Third Wheel also includes a bonus story where Greg talks about what life was like for him before he was born, "in utero". He could eat and "swim" and sleep whenever he wanted. He loved it, but didn't love that his parents would kiss. Whenever they started to kiss he would kick his mother's stomach to get her to stop, which only made them kiss more since they enjoyed him kicking. His mother eventually bought a sound machine that would allow Greg to listen to music or her voice while in the womb, which ruined his naps. This caused him to attempt to escape, which is why he was born three weeks earlier than expected. Greg then goes on to say that ever since then he's been trying to catch up on the sleep and retain the memory of being happy and swimming in the dark by taking hot baths with a night mask on.

Javan Hill found that Pillow Soft Ultra toilet paper was being used by the teachers, not the kids. So Eugene went to the lounge and showed Mrs. Birch. The school introduces a program where students can bring in their own toilet paper. However, the plan backfired when some of the boys started a toilet paper fight in the cafeteria. The school then set a rule that kids are only allowed to have five squares of toilet paper, much to Greg's dismay because he brought in twenty rolls. Now that the staff is checking peoples' bags and lockers to see if they had more than five, Greg decided to have his own bathroom stall to keep all of the toilet paper, but that backfired when people founded out that Greg was hoarding toilet paper. After this whole toilet paper experience, students learned that they are going to raise money of their own if they want something.

Excerpts
The Student Council brainstormed ideas for a fundraiser, but most of the boys in the council decided on a mixed motocross/wrestling event. The fundraising community was formed, and, in the end, the Valentine's Day Dance becomes a school fundraiser. Greg tries to find a date, but it starts to fail. A pantsing fever starts in the school which is quickly stopped by Roy, but a kid under the bleachers quickly pantses him and escapes. Now he (or she) is dubbed as the Mad Pantser. Greg found a leather jacket of his Dad's, but in school, it is confiscated by his mother who said it was not a winter coat. Abigail Brown's boyfriend breaks up with her, and after that Greg and Rowley decide to go with her for the school dance. Greg heads to Rowley's house but he sees two bumps on his chin that looked like mosquito bites, but he realizes it's chickenpox. He tries to cover it up since chickenpox has been contagious in school.
*I looked for a way to escape, but I was trapped. Luckily, Abigail walked out of the bathroom at that exact moment and I grabbed her hand just before Ruby got to me. Abigail's makeup was a mess from all of the crying, but I didn't really care. I was just happy to have an excuse to get away from Ruby. And to be honest with you, I think Abigail was happy maddie is the best to see me, too, so I led her to an empty spot on the dance floor.

*I'd never slow-danced with a girl before, So I didn't know where I was supposed to put my hands. She put hers on my shoulder, and I put mine in my pockets, but that kind of felt dumb. So we met in the middle, and that seemed about right.

Greg goes with Rowley and Abigail to Spriggo's. The host at Spriggo's tells him that gentlemen have to wear sports jackets. Greg has to wear a smelly sports suit which makes them go to Corny's due to the dessert bar, however, Rowley and Abigail order special desserts which makes Greg fib that it's Rowley's birthday to make him get a free cake. At the dance, the theme is Midnight In Paris but old people take one half of the hall for their meeting. Later Uncle Gary tries to sell the Botson T-shirts, but people want their money back after seeing the typo. Greg sees pimples on Abigail which he thinks is chickenpox. Later they head home, Greg realizes the "chickenpox" on Abigail was actually a pimple. He doesn't think Abigail saw it that way, because she wasn't chatty with him on the way home.

*"And speaking of Rowley and Abigail, I heard that the two of them are a couple now. All I can say is if that's true, it makes Rowley 'the worst wingman in history." - Greg Heffley
In the end, Uncle Gary moves out after he wins $40,000 on a scratch card which he wasted a lot of the Heffleys money on to buy scratch cards. Greg ends up getting chickenpox, but he gets to take a bath in peace, but the experience isn't like how he lived before he was born and when he opens his eyes, the towel next to the bathroom was gone. Greg says either someone's messing with him, or either Johnny Cheddar is at it again.

Trivia
Background
*It is unknown who the Mad Pantser is.
In writing the book, Jeff Kinney based it on "a kid’s initial feeling of 'betrayal' when his childhood friend chooses a love interest over him." He continued, "You feel broken up with. You’ve put a ton of time into this friendship, you think you know them better than anybody else, and suddenly they're changing into a different person."
*There is an exculsive version of this book, which has Fregley's secret note in the back. It's a poem by Fregley that shows why girls must go with him to the dance.
