Background
The existence of a sequel to Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid was first teased in an interview with Jeff Kinney on the official Wimpy Kid YouTube channel, in which Kinney says that he would "really like to write more Rowley books."[2] The French title page for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball has two headers reading "Diario de Greg" (Greg's Diary) and "Diario de Rowley" (Rowley's Diary), both with the description "Libros de Jeff Kinney" (Books by Jeff Kinney). On January 16, 2020, Kinney posted on Twitter, "So I’m writing a book about Rowley in a hotel lobby in Providence and who should randomly walk by?" with a picture of him and Robert Capron.[3] The book was officially announced on February 13, 2020, along with its cover and title.[4]
Delay
Due to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, Kinney delayed the book's release date from April 7[4] to August 4, 2020. He announced the delay on March 18 through a series of tweets on Twitter.[5]
- "Hey everyone - we made the decision to delay Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Adventure until August 4th. Many bookstores are closed, and we didn’t feel that releasing it now was the right thing to do. I look forward to sharing this book with you all later this year."

Additionally, Kinney rescheduled his planned tour to promote the book.[6]
- "We don't take this decision lightly, as we know it will disappoint many fans. But we've decided changing the release date will give us a better chance to support its launch and have the book reach its readership in the way we had intended."
