Nathaniel Hawthorne was a real-life American novelist, dark romantic, and short story writer. He is mentioned in The Long Haul.
Greg Heffley recalls that when his fifth-grade teacher barred students from writing to Mik Davies for a class assignment, Greg grabbed a random book from the library and wrote to the book's author, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
In the letter, Greg stated that hadn't read any of his books and asked Nathaniel for his favorite color, animal, flavor of ice cream and superhero movie. Two months later, he received a reply from Katrina Welker, the book's publisher, informing Greg that Nathaniel Hawthorne had died more than a century ago.
