Bots are accounts set up for automated editing, and perform tasks that are too tedious for humans to do. When a bot is making large numbers of edits in a short period, the recent changes can sometimes be overtaken, making it harder to spot more substantial edits by regular users. However, they don't appear in the recent changes by default because of this (although any editor can still choose to see them by clicking "Show bots").
