One kid found a taco shell in the stew (even though it is never said that tacos were served during the schools week long trip to Hardscrabble Farms) and Melinda Henson got sick by eating 3 bowls of stew, so the stew is either very bad or somewhat old. That's how she ended up in nurse's station for a few hours there.
