The Snella Family (Smedley family in the online counterpart) is a large family that lives right across the street from Greg Heffley and his family—according to Greg, every time Mr. and Mrs. Snella have a baby, they throw a big "half-birthday" party once the kid turns six months and invite all the neighbors to the party. Greg claims that the "highlight" of each party is when all the adults line up to try and make the baby laugh (while Mr. and Mrs. Snella videotape it).

Apparently, all the kids in the Snella-family are younger than Greg, because Greg mentions that he's been to every single Snella-family half-birthday party so far, and from what he can remember, no one has ever succeeded in making the baby laugh. Greg claims that the real the Snellas have these parties is because they want to win the $10,000-grand prize on America's Funniest Families, which is why they videotape the adults' antics in getting the babies to laugh. Greg says that the Snellas have gotten some pretty good stuff over the years, but have never actually won.

So far, all known children of Mr. and Mrs. Snella are boys who have first names that start with "S," with the first of them to be named being Shane Snella. It's unknown if Mr. and Mrs. Snella have any daughters or who their oldest child, but it's known that their newest baby (as of the third book in the series) is named Seth, who was presumably born sometime in December.

People Associated with the Snella Family

  • Greg Heffley, made a poor-quality haunted house which Shane attended. He unintentionally scammed Shane by making him pay two dollars for something advertised at 25 cents, then not refunding his money. He also hurt Shawn's feelings by acting "too honest" towards him by saying he couldn't be a basketball player because he's too short and fat.
  • Rowley Jefferson, associated with the haunted house and was grounded for it.
  • Frank Heffley, is openly against going to the half-birthday parties and has avoided all of them because he finds them stupid and humiliating.
  • Mr. Bittner, mentioned character, was filmed splitting his pants during a half-birthday party.
  • Mr. Odom, mentioned character, was filmed tripping and falling into a baby pool during a half-birthday party.
