Synopsis

OctThis is the 11th book of the series.

  • This is the second book that Rowley doesn't wear his usual outfit in the character page. The first book is Hard Luck.
    • This is also the first book since Hard Luck where Rowley is shown in the character page.
  • This is one of the most challenging books in the series, due to a notable amount of pop culture references. This includes, but not limited to:
    • The entire introduction where Greg thinks his life is a TV show is a parody of The Truman Show. It is mentioned from Pages 1 to 15.

    • "Spineticklers" are parodies of Goosebumps, by R.L. Stine, and Spine Tinglers, by M.T. Coffin.

    • "Knee-Knockers" is a parody of Goosebumps, while "Ribtinglers" is a parody of Spine Tinglers. It is first mentioned on Page 38.

    • Spineticklers #48, “Wake Me Up In The Year 3000” is a parody of Futurama. It was first mentioned on Page 41.

    • The idea of clowns kidnapping kids in an ice cream truck is a parody of Clown Horror. Namely the clown jumpscares, and It, a novel by Stephen King, which became a movie in 2017. Greg’s Grandpa first mentions this on Page 115.

    • The geese attacks are a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock classic, The Birds. It is mentioned on Pages 54, 211, and 215.

    • I.M Spooky, the author of the Spineticklers books, is a parody of R.L. Stine, the real life author who wrote the Goosebumps series, and M.T. Coffin, the real life author who wrote the Spine Tinglers series.

    • “Ribtinglers” author, R.U. Scared, is a parody of Goosebumps author, R.L. Stine, and “Knee-Knockers” author, M.T. Grave, is a parody of Spine Tinglers author, M.T. Coffin.

    • The controversy surrounding Spineticklers is a parody of the controversy surrounding Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey.

    • The ending where Greg wants to make a movie is based on The Blair Witch Project. It is first mentioned on Page 193.

    • "Night Of The Night Crawlers" is actually Squirm, but with gummy worms, instead of real life worms. The movie poster is shown on Page 194.

    • There is a girl dressed like Hermoine Granger from the Harry Potter franchise at the Halloween party. She is first shown on Page 168.

    • The nightmare where Greg is a Turtle is a parody of Super Mario Bros. It is first mentioned on Page 76.

    • The nightmare where Zombie Pirates force Greg to walk the plank is a parody of Pirates Of The Caribbean. It is first mentioned on Page 75.

    • The nightmare where Greg has a Tail is a parody of Temple Run, an "Endless Running" video game for most electronic devices. It is first mentioned on Page 74.

  • Greg rarely wears shorts in this book, usually appearing in long pants or jeans.
    • This could just be character development, as Greg is growing up.
  • The words "Double Down" in the title are written in the Cheese font, as confirmed during the book's Virtually Live event. During that event, they hinted that the Cheese/Cheese Touch might return in this book.
    • The Cheese does come back in this book, but the Cheese TOUCH is only mentioned on Page 64.
  • The backpack tipping over Greg on the cover is meant to be an ode to the backpack that makes Greg slouch on the first book's cover.
  • This is the second book that has a reptile skin design.
    • The first is Old School.
      • This is also the first book with the new Amulet logo.
  • On Page 35, in the background, a group of kids are playing what may be "Girls Chase Boys".
  • This is the fourth book where Fregley is absent.
  • This is the first time the spine uses two colors (Red-Orange and Yellow). The second is The Getaway (which uses the colors Blue-Teal and Green).
  • This is the second odd-numbered book to not have it’s sub-title start with "The". The first is the first book.
    • This is also the second odd-numbered book which doesn't have three words in its sub-title (this book only has two words in its sub-title). The first is also the first book, which doesn't have a sub-title.
  • This is the first time Greg's tongue is shown on the cover.
  • Jeff Kinney stated in an interview that the book will be about exceptionalism. In an interview, Jeff stated that "Greg always thought he was special in some way, despite lacking any evidence to support that notion. In the 11th book, Greg sets out to discover what makes him unique in order to justify the grand vision he has of himself." Find out more by visiting this link:
  • It Is revealed Greg has more relatives. It also shows that Peepaw may be dead, or he’s still alive.
  • This is the first time since Hard Luck where the months don't skip from the previous book.
  • This is the first book since Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever where the month in the beginning is the same as the month in the end from the previous book.
  • There is another appearance of LEGO, owned by Maddox Selsam.
  • This is the first book that references a lot of myths.
  • This is the second book where The Heffleys' Pig has a role where he’s in the Heffley family.
    • The pig eats candy twice in this book. It ate candy corn on Page 99, and it ate gummy worms on Page 210.
      • This book reveals that the pig can get sick if it eats candy corn, but doesn’t get sick if it eats gummy worms.
  • This is the first book in which the color of the spine is different than that of the cover. The second is The Getaway.

Errors

  • On page 64 it says Roast Roast Beef when it should say Roast Beef, which is wrong. But in The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary: The Next Chapter, on page 69, the card on the table says: "Todays Special, Roast Roast Beef," so it could've been on purpose.
    • This was proven to be a mistake, as it was fixed in a re-print.
      • The Roast Roast Beef special is possibly a joke by the movie makers to make fun of the error.
  • In the book, Greg says Nana worked as a waitress. However, in the preview, he says she worked as a nurse.
    • This may just be a change of plans.
  • On the top of page 49, the characters were shown too short.
  • On page 94, Mrs. Selsam's leg is in a humanly impossible position, and her skirt is shown as only covering that one leg.
