In The Third Wheel, Michael tells his girlfriend Abigail Brown that he can't come to the school dance because of family obligations, and he thought Abigail won't come to the dance, so he can go with Cherie. But when he arrived Abigail had already come. So this made Abigail cry when she saw Cherie with Michael. Also, it is shown that Michael wasn't even expecting Abigail to be there, and that's why he took off.
