The giving tree is a tree meant for requests.Someone writes a request in an envelope and place's it on the tree and a family will pick a random envelope and buys what ever it says. The requests seen in the book is "Adult male requests a scarf and a pair of gloves" but greg wants to right a letter but he will have to make himself anonymous so he writes a letter like this "Juvenile male requests cash, as much as you are willing to donate. Please leave the money in an unmarked envelope under the recycling bin behind the church. P.S. Make sure you are not followed."

The Giving Tree was a Christmas Tree where a person had to write a note saying that the person wants something and put it on the tree. Another person has to take out any random note and give the person the thing they want. Greg Heffley once asked for money, but wrote that the person has to put the money under the bin because Greg knew Susan Heffley wouldn't allow anybody to give him money.
