It turns out Rowley collected a bunch of poison ivy leaves which was placed on the fire, he got covered with poison ivy spots on Saturday morning after he woke up and possibly he got exposed to poison ivy. His father Mr. Jefferson woke up too and he discovered that he had trouble breathing after he inhaled the fumes and got it into his lungs, possibly he inhaled poison ivy fumes after his son put poison ivy leaves onto fire.
