Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth is the fifth book of the Wimpy Kid series. The cover of the book is purple. The cover and the name of the book was announced on July 29, 2010. The caption is "This Fall... Everything Changes".

The book is about Greg and Rowley's friendship, his final year in middle school, and about the pressures of growing up. This will be marked as the second time talking about Greg and Rowley's friendship. Notably some characters have underwent changes since the last book.

Greg is getting bored of video games and comics, and has matured slightly. However, he still overreacts greatly to minor inconveniences and he is still very hypocritical and harsh. Manny is no longer spoiled, although he continues to trouble Greg. Rodrick has matured slightly as well, no longer physically harming anyone voluntarily, although he does cause major trouble around the house and still pulls pranks on Greg.

Synopsis

Greg starts off the book by restating his problematic relationship with Rowley, which has shattered during the end of Dog Days. Greg stated that he would like to be friends with Rowley, but it is implied that Greg only wished this to use him as a puppet again. Greg then criticizes two of his potential replacements for Rowley, Christopher Brownfield and Tyson Sanders, for their flaws. It is also implied that Greg uses Christopher as a mosquito magnet, not as a real friend. Greg decided to give one last chance for Rowley to apologize, threatening that if he did not, then "he would come out looking very good in his autobiography," once again showing Greg's high expectations for himself. Greg then stated that Rowley found a new friend named Brian, who is apparently in high school or college and is working for a company called "Cool Brian", a company designed to send "wholesome mentors for growing boys."
