On 28 April 2016, the name, color, and cover of Double Down were revealed at the third annual Wimpy Kid Virtually Live event.

Jeff Kinney stated in an interview that the book will be about exceptionalism. In an interview, Jeff stated that "Greg always thought he was special in some way, despite lacking any evidence to support that notion.
