Mr. Ray (known as Mr. Bertrand in the online version) is a teacher at Greg's school and the monitor of detention. After Greg is given detention for sleeping during class and goes down to Mr. Ray's room to serve detention, he presumably explains the rules of detention and Greg finds out all you do in detention is sit in your seat and wait for it to be over. A kid named Leon Rickett, who is seated in the seat in front of Greg begins to continually bother Greg whenever Mr. Ray looks away. However, Mr. Ray eventually catches Leon bothering Greg and reprimands him and tells Leon if he sees him touching Greg again, he would be in trouble. However, Greg having enough of Leon's bugging decides to end it and claps and shouts the instant Mr. Ray looks away again. Mr. Ray, not realizing the truth, tells Leon he has to stay another 30 minutes in detention and gives Leon another detention for the next day. He was briefly the supervisor of study hall during the Valentine's Day Dance.
